The content shared on social media platforms can leave a much deeper impact than adults perceive. In particular, images generated with artificial intelligence technology that challenge the perception of reality can cause significant upheaval in the emotional world of young individuals. This situation reopens the discussion about the psychological and emotional effects of digital content on children. Children at a young age have not yet fully developed their ability to distinguish between fiction and reality.
While a child may be directly affected by the melancholic visuals and dramatic sounds in a video and start crying, this reaction is not universal among all children. According to Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory, some children directly model the actions they see in the media, record them in their minds, and tend to replicate them. Especially if children exposed to violence or aggressive content have not fully developed their ability to distinguish, impulse control, or empathy, they normalize these actions, perceive them as a show of power or a solution, and begin to mimic them just like in the video. On the other hand, children who have been raised with parental guidance, who can distinguish between fiction and reality, and who have developed self-regulation skills do not mimic the violent actions they watch. They filter them out without turning them into behavior, deeming them harmful or inappropriate.
