Prosecutor Submits Opinion in Mabel Matiz “Obscenity” Case

Mabel Matiz, whose real name is Fatih Karaca, has been at the center of controversy for a while now due to the lyrics of his song "Perperişan".
Numerous complaints had been lodged with CIMER, alleging that certain expressions in the song were 'obscene' and could potentially be harmful, especially for children.
Following these submissions, a prosecution was initiated, and the indictment prepared within the scope of the investigation demanded the famous artist to stand trial. Mabel Matiz, appearing before the judge at the first hearing, denied the accusations, defending that the expressions in question embodied artistic expression and metaphor.
Meanwhile, a frequently asked question during the time the song was released resurfaced: 'Was this song written for a man?' In response to this question, Mabel Matiz had previously emphasized that his works could not be reduced to a specific individual, and expressed that emotions were nourished from a place beyond gender. This approach by the artist had been seen as a significant clue about his way of interpreting his works.
The final hearing of the case, held at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance, was attended by the lawyers representing the parties involved.
According to a report by Deniz Yusufoğlu from Sabah, the indictment prepared by the trial prosecutor suggested that the lyrics of the song contained descriptions that went beyond physical and mental metaphors, allegedly hinting at sexual intercourse.
The prosecutor argued that these expressions were contrary to general moral standards and the dissemination of the song on platforms accessible to everyone, especially posed a risk for children. Consequently, a prison sentence of up to 3 years was demanded for Mabel Matiz.
On the other hand, the artist's lawyer requested additional time to prepare a defense against the indictment. The court, accepting this request, postponed the hearing until May 8.
