When most people hear the word 'cardboard,' they typically think of boxes, packing materials, or recycling bins. However, Wikkelhouse, developed by the Dutch company Fiction Factory, takes cardboard to an entirely different level. Wikkelhouse is neither a concrete structure nor a traditional brick house. Instead, it is produced by wrapping 24 layers of high-quality cardboard around a special mold in the shape of a house.

At the heart of Wikkelhouse lies 24 layers of cardboard, wrapped around a rotating mold in the shape of a house. These layers are bonded together with eco-friendly adhesive, resulting in a durable, insulated sandwich structure.

Cardboard may seem like a weak material when considered on its own. However, when combined in multiple layers, the structure becomes both lightweight and usable. Moreover, the cardboard surfaces are not left exposed to the outdoor environment; they are protected with a waterproof yet breathable foil and exterior cladding.

In this way, Wikkelhouse stands out as an unusual architectural example that overturns the perception of cardboard being fragile. According to sources, the structure is designed to meet the standards for temporary or permanent accommodation and aims for a minimum lifespan of 50 years.

One of the most striking features of Wikkelhouse is its modular structure. The house is produced piece by piece in a workshop in Amsterdam. These segments are then transported to the site where they will be installed and connected on-site.

Each segment is designed to be approximately 1.2 meters in depth. Users can expand their living space with additional modules as per their needs. The structure can be customized with the addition of a kitchen, bathroom, shower, special window openings, and various interior layout options.

Thanks to its lightweight structure, Wikkelhouse, which often does not require a traditional foundation, can serve as a holiday home, office, guest house, or compact living space. In this regard, the project offers a faster, portable, and sustainable building model as an alternative to lengthy construction processes.
