Announcing the Medium-Term Program covering the 20272029 period, Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz predicted that inflation would stand at 28.4% by the end of 2026, with a target to reduce it to 21% in 2027. These announced targets have once again brought the method used in minimum wage calculations into focus.
Speaking on a live broadcast on CNN Türk, economist Muhammet Bayram reminded that no interim increase was made to the minimum wage in July this year. He stated that last year's increase was made by taking a kind of average of the actual inflation and the targeted inflation. Bayram pointed out that the prediction was 21% at that time, but it rose to 28% by the end of the year, yet the increase was still made according to the estimate.
The first clear figure has arrived for the minimum wage increase in 2027!
Economist Muhammet Bayram emphasized that calculations should be based on the actual inflation rather than estimates. He stated, 'It shouldn't be done according to what's expected, but rather according to what has actually occurred. Plus, a welfare share should be given. If it's done based on last year, a total increase of 4950% emerges, with 28% and 21%. There should be at least a 25% increase for the minimum wage earners.'
Reminding us that the hunger threshold research by TÜRKİŞ stands at 3237 thousand liras, Bayram continued, 'I believe we are on the brink of a minimum wage increase of at least 30%, and at most 35%. The theory that if wages increase, inflation increases has collapsed this year, as there was no increase in July. The public needs support at this point; I expect at least a 30% increase in the minimum wage.'
