Why Did Amazon Buy MGM?

News about the deal between Amazon and MGM began streaming in on Thursday, March 17. It is one of Amazon's strategies to expand its already wide array of content. However, viewers are questioning whether Amazon's merger deal should fall back on them as the streamer quite recently hiked its Prime Video subscription rates. I guess it's the price you have to pay for a large inflow of movies and TV shows, whether you choose to watch them or not.

What Does The Purchase Deal Mean for Subscribers?

Metro-Goldwyn Mayer (MGM) has been a leading entertainment platform since its launch in 1924, boasting so many classic movies and TV shows such as the Robocop franchise, Rocky franchise, Pink Panther franchise and the unforgettable Tom and Jerry shows a majority of us grew up watching. MGM also boasts recent releases like House of Gucci, Licorice Pizza, Cyrano and Dog (2022).

Amazon's merger with MGM means that Prime Video subscribers will get access to lots of titles, possibly more than 4,000 movies and 17,000 TV shows. However, not all of MGM's content will be released to Prime Video at once because there are still some licensing deals pending. Not only will Amazon brand its name on MGM creations, but it will also launch exclusive content very soon.
