Clear phone cases start to turn yellow over time. This is due to ultraviolet rays from the sun, heat, and the material the case is made of.

Let’s take a closer look.

TPU and silicone are the materials most commonly used in clear cases.

The most common materials used in clear phone cases include thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and silicone. TPU is known for its scratch resistance and ability to absorb impact.

According to case manufacturer ZAGG, clear cases made from TPU and silicone yellow faster than those made from polycarbonate.

Ultraviolet rays from the sun begin to break down the molecules that make up plastic, accelerating oxidation.

According to TPU manufacturer Covestro, exposure to UV light causes aromatic TPUs to form new compounds with chemical structures similar to those of dyes. These compounds are what make the case turn yellow.

Heat and oils from your hands also speed up yellowing.

Your phone can heat up while charging or gaming. Exposure to the sun and holding it all day can also make the case warm.

Natural oils from your skin build up on the case and speed up yellowing. Sweat is acidic, too, and can wear down the plastic over time.

Additives designed to prevent yellowing aren’t a foolproof solution either.

According to Covestro, UV stabilizers added to aromatic TPU don’t prevent yellowing; they only slow it down. That’s why non-yellowing aliphatic TPU formulations have been developed.

The simplest way to slow yellowing is to keep your phone out of direct sunlight. When you’re not using it, storing it in a pocket or bag—or somewhere cool and dry—can limit the case’s exposure to UV light and heat.
