Magnet Hunter Pulls Shopping Carts and Bikes From Amsterdam Canal
Amsterdam is known for its bicycles as much as its canals, and an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 bikes are pulled from the city’s waterways each year. Since calling in a crew to retrieve a bike and then repair it would cost more, people generally leave bikes that end up in the canals where they are.
A content creator known as “bonditreasurehunter” shared footage of magnet fishing in one of Amsterdam’s canals. First, shopping carts came up; then came some crabs and three bicycles.

So, how do you go magnet fishing?
Magnet fishing involves tying a powerful neodymium magnet to a long, sturdy rope, casting it into the water and using it to pull up metal objects from the bottom. The rope is usually 15 to 30 meters long, and gloves are essential. The magnet’s rated pulling force can be reduced by water resistance as you haul it back up, so heavier objects may require a second magnet, as shown in the video.
In Amsterdam, the city’s water authority, Waternet, retrieves bicycles from the canals with a crane and claw mounted on a barge. The recovered bikes are either sold for scrap or repaired and put back into use. Guinness World Records also lists Amsterdam as the city where the most bicycles are pulled from canals. The Netherlands has no national permit system for magnet fishing, and the rules vary from one municipality to another. The practice is banned in Groningen, while Amersfoort began working on a ban in 2019 after two hand grenades were pulled from the water in a single week.
In Turkey, there is no separate law that specifically regulates magnet fishing. However, Law No. 2863 on the Protection of Cultural and Natural Assets makes unauthorized excavation and treasure hunting criminal offenses. So if you find an object of historical significance underwater, you should report it to the nearest museum or the relevant authorities rather than keep it. Although magnet fishing may seem like a harmless hobby by the canal, it’s important to check the local rules before taking part.
