Once working in an international consulting firm, Gökçe Kübra Turan Yıldırım today sits in the captain's seat of one of the world's largest passenger aircrafts, the Airbus A380. Moreover, she made history as the first Turkish female pilot to occupy this seat.
So how did an electrical and electronics engineer from Yerköy, Yozgat, a graduate of Bilkent University, end up leaving a bright office career to take the helm of an aircraft?

His Fascination with Airplanes Changed Everything
Gökçe Kübra, a graduate of Bilkent University's Electrical and Electronics Engineering department, started her master's degree at Boğaziçi University after graduation and worked as an analyst at Accenture during the same period. From the outside, she seemed to have a very bright career.
However, the internship she did at THY Teknik in her third year of university opened a completely different door for her. The complex systems of airplanes and the unique world of aviation led her to want to take her engineering knowledge to the cockpit. Eventually, she decided to become a pilot, leaving behind the safe route offered by her master's degree and corporate career.
A Career Journey from a Four-Person Plane to an A380
In 2013, Gökçe Kübra was accepted into the Turkish Airlines' pilot candidate program and went to the United States for training. She made her first flight with a small four-seater Piper PA28. It was hard to even imagine back then that years later, she would be sitting in the cockpit of a giant A380 carrying hundreds of passengers.
In 2015, she made her first jet flight with Airbus A320. In 2019, she started to pursue her career at Dubai-based Emirates and continued to fly in the A380 fleet. After thousands of hours of flight experience in the right seat, she completed the rigorous training and evaluations required for captaincy.
The Final Step to the Captain's Seat
In February 2025, the moment she had been waiting for arrived, and Gökçe Kübra Turan Yıldırım became the captain pilot of Airbus A380. Thus, she earned the title of the first Turkish female pilot to command one of the world's largest passenger aircraft.
Flying the A380 is not just about taking control of a giant plane. It involves carrying the responsibility of hundreds of passengers and dozens of crew members, especially requiring the ability to make the right decision within seconds in unexpected situations.
Everything in the Sky Doesn't Always Go as Planned
One of the flights experienced by Gökçe Kübra is a striking example of what being a captain means. During a flight to Washington, she decided to change the route and make an emergency landing in Copenhagen due to a passenger's illness.
In such a situation, fuel is recalculated, the cabin crew is organized, and the safety of hundreds of passengers is considered at the same time. So, when the cockpit door closes, the job is not only about flying the plane; making decisions and taking responsibility also become part of the captain's duties.
From Yozgat to All Around the World
Gökçe Kübra, originally from Yerköy, Yozgat, is now flying to different parts of the world with long-haul flights. While flying on routes such as London, Paris, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, she takes time to rest after long flights.
