Sony Pictures has made a significant move towards the cinematic adaptation of the Labubu toy series.

The director's chair for the film has been entrusted to Paul King, known for his work on the Paddington films and Wonka. King will not only direct but also produce the project. It was announced last month that Sony had acquired the screen rights for Labubu. As of now, there has been no official statement regarding the plot of the film.
The Labubu characters were originally designed by Hong Kong-born illustrator Kasing Lung, making their first appearance in 2015.

Later on, in collaboration with Pop Mart, they were transformed into plush toys and made their entrance into the global market. The element of surprise provided by the mystery box system added an extra thrill for collectors. The rare 'special series' toys reached record prices in the second-hand market. It was reported that some Labubus were sold for prices exceeding a thousand dollars. The interest surged even more in 2024 when Kpop stars and Hollywood celebrities started using Labubu accessories. This popularity was reflected in Pop Mart's shares, and the company's value multiplied in a short period of time.
The upcoming Labubu movie, which is set to bring the global success of the toy to the big screen, is already eagerly anticipated.
