According to the latest TOP500 list, the fastest supercomputer in the world is now El Capitan. Operated at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the United States, this system reaches a staggering level of 1.8 quintillion operations per second.

Frontier is operating at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the state of Tennessee, USA. When it topped the TOP500 list in 2022, it marked a historic milestone for computer science. That's because Frontier has been recorded as the first supercomputer to reach the exaflop level, which signifies a staggering one quintillion operations per second.
Visualizing this speed isn't a walk in the park. One quintillion operations per second is equivalent to placing 18 zeros next to 1. According to the 2025 TOP500 data, Frontier is listed as the world's second fastest supercomputer, boasting a performance of 1,353 exaflops/s HPL. The system, powered by AMD processors and GPU accelerators, is capable of activating millions of cores simultaneously, enabling it to perform colossal calculations within mere seconds.
El Capitan ascended to the summit, earning the title of the world's fastest computer.
The system that has recently surpassed Frontier in the current ranking is El Capitan. Located at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, El Capitan was confirmed as the world's fastest supercomputer in 2024 and maintained its top position in the 2025 TOP500 lists. According to data provided by AMD, the system achieved a level of 1.742 exaflops/s in the High Performance Linpack test. In the November 2025 list of TOP500, El Capitan's performance was recorded as 1.809 exaflops/s.
This translates to approximately 1.8 quintillion operations per second. Therefore, El Capitan is not merely a fast computer; it's a massive computational infrastructure for scientific simulations, nuclear safety studies, artificial intelligence, climate modeling, and materials research. According to a statement from LLNL, the system's theoretical peak performance can reach up to 2.88 exaflops, and its energy efficiency stands out among high-performance systems.
