As real estate prices continue to climb, houses that were once considered to have a 'bad aura' are beginning to attract more attention.
Prices of "haunted" houses are being slashed by 10 to 20 percent.
Individuals opting for these cheaper houses often resort to a company specialized in protecting them from evil spirits. The company, having expertise in investigating 'haunted' houses, performs exorcism rituals to alleviate tenants' fears and maintain the value of the properties.
In 2022, realtor Kazutoshi Kodama established Kachimode, a company specializing in the investigation of 'ghost houses'. According to information on Kachimode's website, hundreds of houses have been examined and freed from evil spirits to date.
In an interview with Japanese media outlet Toyo Keizai, Kodama stated that his team typically spends a few days at each property, employing scientific methods to detect any abnormalities.
They are utilizing thermal cameras, video and audio recording devices, as well as electromagnetic field meters.
The company asserts that it leverages technology to determine whether a home is haunted or not. Factors such as room temperature, humidity, noise, air pressure, and airflow are meticulously monitored. The company then issues a certificate confirming that 'no paranormal activities were encountered.' According to the information on their website, the current cost for such an investigation ranges from 80,000 to 150,000 per day (equivalent to 540 to 1,000 US dollars).
In one recounted tale, a mother committed suicide in a house in Chiba Prefecture, and her son also lost his life there. During Kodama's investigation, it was reported that the computer suddenly shut down and never turned back on. The team, who spent approximately 20 nights in the house, claimed to have detected minor electromagnetic abnormalities. This house did not receive a 'safe' certificate.
In Japan, some homeowners with homes that remain unoccupied invite Buddhist monks or Shinto priests to perform exorcism rituals. These religious figures live in the house for a period of time, cleansing it of evil spirits.
