Iconic Automobile Brand Closes Factory and Auctions Off Final Vehicle Collection
The Swedish giant Saab, once a hallmark in the world of automobiles, is bidding farewell with a historic auction. The last prototypes and rare parts that have remained in the Trollhättan factory, the heart of the brand since 1947, are being offered for sale via Klaravik.
In 2012, NEVS (National Electric Vehicle Sweden), who purchased the assets of the bankrupt Saab, found themselves on the brink of halting all operations, consequently putting the last vehicles and equipment from the factory up for auction.
In the wake of the financial crisis experienced by China's Evergrande Group, the company is downsizing and, with this sale, bidding farewell to its historic headquarters.
At the auction, eight pivotal pieces that document the brand's efforts towards technological transformation are awaiting their new owners:
Saab 93 Series: This includes three pre-production vehicles from 2014, three electric prototypes (manufactured by NEVS), and a test vehicle equipped with a range extender hybrid system.
Hengchi 5: An electric SUV model produced under the Evergrande brand.
The sales list also features thousands of rare parts left over from the factory, design models, and historical car show posters.
The hopes for mass production of the Emily GT sedan, which was developed by NEVS engineers and caught attention with its in-wheel motor technology, have officially come to an end during this process.
Emily GT's program director, Peter Dahl, had declared the vehicle to be 'ready for production in all aspects.' However, the purchase negotiations with Canadian EV Electra ended in vain when the deal fell through in May 2024.
The sale process, planned to take place via the Sweden-based auction site Klaravik, is set out as follows:
Start: May 21 (without a set minimum price).
End and Factory Tour: May 30.
On the day the auction closes, a final tour of the Trollhättan factory will be arranged for bidders and Saab enthusiasts. Although some of the manufacturing facilities in the area continue to be used as R&D centers by Polestar, the era of Saab and NEVS will be completely closed with this sale.
