The public library in the city of Kiama, Australia, was reunited with a lost book a full 150 years later. The 1858 edition of 'Antiquities of Athens' was found inside an old chest, which was bricked up in a fireplace, during renovation works in a house. The person who found the book believes that it may have been taken from the library by a family member who lived in the house years ago.
150-Year Debt: $28,000
Library Director Michelle Hudson stated that it is still unknown who borrowed the book. This is because the borrowing records from that period have not survived to the present day.
However, if calculated according to the old rules in the book, it was stated that the delay fee could reach approximately 28,000 Australian dollars today. However, instead of pursuing this debt, the library decided to preserve the book in its historical collection.
Book Emerging After a Century and a Half Will Not Be Lent Again!
The book, which had been lost for about a century and a half, surprisingly remained in largely good condition. The work, which contains dozens of historical drawings, will now become one of the special pieces of the library's local history collection.
