Busted! Cameraman Catches Fan Trying to Blind Opponent Goalie with a Laser During the Match
At times, fans can exhibit behaviors that exceed the boundaries of sportsmanship during matches. Fans who, in the heat of the moment or in an act of protest, rush onto the field cause the game to halt and security breaches. Moreover, there's the issue of fans shining lasers into the eyes of goalkeepers, which can lead to serious health problems for the eyes.
A noteworthy incident occurred during a match in the Argentine League (Liga Profesional) between Estudiantes de La Plata and Vélez Sarsfield. In the second half of the match, a fan in the stands attempted to obstruct the vision of the opposing team's (Vélez) goalkeeper, Álvaro Montero, using a green laser. This moment was captured by the live broadcast cameras.
You can watch it from here;
Shining a laser is not merely considered a "joke" or "nuisance" in many countries, but it is classified under physical assault. The reason for this is that laser beams can cause temporary blindness in the goalkeeper, damage to the retina, and a loss of concentration that can lead to serious injuries.

Is there a penalty for this?
1. Personal Penalties (Directed at Fans)
As in the case of the incident in the video, the perpetrator can face the following penalties once identified:
Stadium Ban: The individual can be banned from all stadiums for a specific period (usually between 1 to 5 years) or for life.
Legal Fine and Detention: Legal proceedings can be initiated for disrupting the order of sports competitions and endangering the health of athletes.
Termination of Club Membership: If the individual is a club member, the club can terminate his/her membership through its disciplinary board.
2. Club Penalties (Directed at Teams)
The behavior of the fan directly impacts the club:
Financial Penalty: Federations (like TFF, UEFA or AFA in Argentina) impose hefty fines on the host club due to 'security failures'.
Playing Without Spectators / Closing Stands: Depending on the magnitude of the incident, it can be decided that the next matches will be played to empty stands.
Point Deduction: In very rare and extreme cases (incidents that lead to the suspension of the match), the team's points can be deducted.
