About Back to the Future: The Musical
As mentioned above, Back to the Future: The Musical is a stage musical that made its debut on February 20, 2020.
This musical was based on the sci-fi film Back to the Future, which premiered in theaters on July 3, 1985.
The story revolves around teenager Marty McFly, who finds himself face-to-face with a huge dilemma when an experiment by his eccentric friend, Doc, goes awry. He is whisked back to 1955 in a time-traveling device made by retrofitting a DMC DeLorean car with a flux capacitor. With the help of his friend, Marty has to find a way to return back to the future, in 1985.
The film earned $381.1 million, making it the highest-grossing film of 1985 worldwide. Its huge success was followed by two more sequels, 1989’s Back to the Future: Part II and 1990’s Back to the Future: Part III, with combined earnings of $965 million.
In September 2020, it was announced that the musical production’s remaining run in Manchester would be canceled and transferred to the Adelphi Theater in the West End. This second production opened on September 13, 2021.
Then, on June 22, 2022, Back to the Future: The Musical’s Twitter account posted an announcement saying that the production would be coming to Broadway.
The account also released a teaser for its coming in 2023, making its fans excited.
With just two productions so far, the musical has already won Best New Musical at the Laurence Olivier Awards. It earned seven nominations in total, including Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical, and Best Original Score or New Orchestrations.
The musical runs for 2 hours and 40 minutes, including a 15-minute interval. The screenplay is written by the same writers who wrote the film script, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale. The duo recognizes the film’s success, and so, they just put a few changes to the characters and plot. According to Gale, the stage version would retell the story on stage in a brand new way.
