The lawsuit where some iPhone users in the U.S. accused Apple of intentional slowing down of their phones just a few months after purchase concluded in the summer of 2023.
The court found Apple guilty and ordered the tech giant to pay a total compensation penalty of $500 million to the plaintiff users.
As we entered 2024, the tech giant began compensating each affected iPhone owner with approximately $92.
But what is the real story? Did Apple truly slow down iPhone devices?
The primary cause behind the abrupt performance drop in older iPhone devices can be traced back to the hidden iOS 10.2.1 update released in January 2017.
The said update, which included some performance adjustments for all iPhone 6 and 7 series phones, was initially rolled out to prevent devices from shutting down suddenly due to insufficient battery performance.
However, it was observed that as the battery life of the phones decreased, the processor speed also dropped, resulting in a significant slowdown of the devices.

Indeed, Apple successfully addressed the early shutdown issue with the new update.
In the subsequent course of events, users of iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, or 7 Plus, who brought the issue to a class-action lawsuit, initially gained the right to a discounted battery replacement.
In August 2023, Apple ultimately reached a settlement, agreeing to pay a specific compensation penalty to all users involved.
