An ancient Mayan city, hidden amidst dense forests in Mexico for centuries, has been unearthed. The ancient city, discovered in the north of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, was named Minanbé, meaning 'no road', due to the difficulty of reaching it. The site boasts a pyramid temple exceeding 13 meters, plazas, palace structures, water channels, and 14 stelae and altars.

Investigations in Minanbé revealed that the city was not merely a small settlement. The area was found to be home to plazas, terraces, water canals, palace structures, religious areas, and a pyramid temple exceeding 13 meters.

The ancient city, spread over an area of approximately 15 hectares, also drew attention with the discovery of 14 stelae and altars. The presence of so many monuments suggests that Minanbé could have been a significant regional center in its own time.

Researchers believe that the city, particularly between AD 600-900, stood out during the Late Classic Period, based on the inscriptions, ceramics, and architectural features in the area. This period coincides with the years when the Maya city-states gained power and subsequently entered a period of decline.

The fact that it hadn't been plundered made the discovery even more valuable.

One of the significant details that sets Minanbé apart is the fact that the city has largely remained unlooted. While many ancient sites suffer serious damage due to illegal excavations and treasure hunting, no significant signs of looting have been detected in this area.

This situation presents archaeologists with a clearer picture of Maya life and urban organization. Although time and weather conditions have caused some wear and tear on certain structures, the architectural traces and stone monuments in the area provide valuable insights into the city's function in the past.

The discovery once again demonstrated that the Maya world is still not fully understood. Hidden beneath dense forests, Minanbé has been recorded as one of the new ancient cities brought to light through the combination of technology and fieldwork.
