14 Nostalgic Household Items That Every Turkish Home Seemed To Have
Homes used to look a lot more alike. Look through old birthday photos and you will keep saying, 'We had one of those too!' Some things turned up in almost every Turkish home you walked into.
Some were a mother's pride and joy, others a father's must-have, and they held their place for years. Count how many were in your home as you read the list.
In the living room, the deer tapestry had the best spot in the house.
1. The Deer Tapestry
Deer drinking from a forest stream have been eyeing every guest from the opposite wall for years. Nobody remembers when it was bought or who from, but nobody dares take it down either.
2. The Crystal Glasses In The Display Cabinet
Once a year they come out, get dusted and go back in the cabinet. They are said to be saved for special occasions, but that special occasion never quite arrives.
3. The Remote Wrapped In Plastic
So that it would not wear out, the remote was wrapped in plastic on day one and stayed that way for years. The buttons may become impossible to read, but the plastic never comes off.
4. The Lace On Top Of The Tube TV
The top of that huge television could not be left bare. The lace spread over it and the figurine on top of that were the living room's inseparable duo.
Around the house, these were the everyday essentials.
5. The Kettle Always Warming On The Stove
This kettle stayed on the stove all winter, so the house never ran out of hot water. It handled everything from brewing tea to washing dishes.
6. The Drum Oven Behind Those Perfectly Risen Cakes
Cakes and pastries baked in these drum ovens had a taste all their own.
7. The Wall Calendar With A Page Torn Off Every Morning
With a saying of the day and a recipe on the back, it was the house's most reliable news source. Torn-off pages often became shopping lists, and the calendar itself usually came from the neighbourhood grocer.
8. The Lace Cover On The Washing Machine
Even the most visible item in the bathroom could not go undecorated. The machine was covered with a carefully worked cloth, and in some homes even the detergent box got dressed up.
9. The Glassed-In Balcony
One day the decision was made, the balcony was closed in with glass, and it became the home's most useful storage room. Pickle jars, old belongings: everything ended up there.
From the bookshelf to the front door, these were hard to miss.
10. The Encyclopedia Set On The Best Shelf
Volumes collected one by one with newspaper coupons stood in the most visible spot on the bookcase. Rarely opened outside homework time, they were in charge of the home's intellectual image.
11. The Wheel-Patterned Doormat
Who made this pattern first and how it spread across the whole country, we honestly do not know. What we do know is that a whole generation grew up with this doormat.
12. The Imposing Lion-Head Door Knocker
The lion reminded everyone at the door how strong the household was, and it was also the secret fear of the kids on the street.
13. The Evil Eye Bead Above The Door
However modern the home, an evil eye bead always hung at the door. Its one job was to protect the house from bad looks.
14. The Satellite Dishes On The Balconies
Anyone looking at an apartment building's facade saw a whole collection of satellite dishes. Each was pointed at a different satellite, and nobody could touch the settings.
