In 2025, Copenhagen put an end to Vienna's three-year reign. The capital of Denmark managed to hold onto its top spot in 2026, being chosen as the most livable city in the world for the second year in a row.

The top 10 list featured cities from Europe, Australia, Japan, and Canada. Australia made a notable entry with three cities - Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide. Japan also had a strong representation with Osaka and Tokyo making it to the top 10.

Copenhagen's consistent top ranking is attributed to its perfect scores in stability, education, and infrastructure categories. The city's extensive public transport network, bike-friendly structure, access to basic services, and low security risk were highlighted as its strong suits.

Vienna secured the second spot with its advanced health system and public services. Melbourne, on the other hand, clinched the third position with its high performance in health, education, culture, and infrastructure. Sydney's rise to the fourth place amplified the presence of Australian cities on the list.

The index examines cities in five main categories: stability, health services, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Under these headings, approximately 30 different indicators such as crime rates, risk of social unrest, quality of health services, transportation, housing, energy, and educational opportunities are evaluated.

While the global average remained constant, the disparity between cities has increased.

The global livability average remained largely stable in 2026. However, this doesn't imply that all cities are progressing in the same direction. While some Asian cities managed to increase their scores thanks to health investments, significant declines were observed in regions where conflict and political instability escalated.

War and security issues in the Middle East pulled down the stability scores of cities in the region. On the other hand, Asian cities, led by those in China that invested in health infrastructure, made progress in the rankings. Improvements in security observed in North American cities like New York also positively reflected on the scores.

Once again, the city at the bottom of the list was Damascus, the capital of Syria. War, poverty, infrastructure problems, and a low stability score kept the city at the end of the list.
