Located at the highest point of Cappadocia, Uchisar offers a postcard-perfect view of the region.

Cappadocia, which was under Roman rule in the 17th century BC, was shaped by monasteries, churches, cells and cellars with the contributions of Christian priests and monks. Uchisar Castle became an important refuge and defence point during this period.

Over time, the importance of the region increased even more with the intense Turkish migrations to Anatolia, and it was annexed to the Ottoman lands during the reign of Bayezid II. From the first census in 1530 until the 1960s, the population of Uchisar was around 3000.

Uchisar is one of the most special spots worth seeing in Nevşehir with its carved houses, historical castles and stylish restaurants. It is only 5 kilometres from the centre of Nevşehir. Dating back to the Roman period, the castle is located 12 km west of Urgup and 10 km south of Avanos. It is also located at the intersection of historical roads such as the King's Road and the Silk Road.

At the summit of the castle, there are carved jars, tombs and large cisterns. When you look to the north, you will see Cevizli Fairy Chimneys, Nevşehir and Oylu Mountain to the west, and the summit of Hasan Mountain to the southwest. Uchisar Castle is also the only point where both Erciyes and Mount Hasan can be seen together.

It is possible to reach Uchisar by bus from different parts of Cappadocia. There are bus services from Nevsehir to Uchisar every half hour (between 07:30 - 19:00). The distance between the two points is approximately 8 km.

'As soon as you start to see Uchisar Castle from a distance, you fall under its spell. It can be quite crowded on holidays, and there may be parking problems. But when you reach the summit, you will realise that it was worth it. The view is magnificent.'

'It can be windy in spring, but the climb was quite enjoyable. There are about 100 steps. There are also resting points between the stairs. There were paintings in the form of an exhibition at the entrance. The view at the summit is definitely worth seeing.'
