Two consecutive earthquakes, measuring 7.5 and 7.2 on the Richter scale and occurring just 39 seconds apart, wreaked significant devastation in Venezuela. Initially, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported the magnitude of the tremor as 7.1, but swiftly updated their data, revealing the true severity of the situation. The epicenter of the first quake was located 23 kilometers southeast of the city of Yumare, and it took place 10 kilometers beneath the Earth's surface. On the other hand, the second tremor, which struck 24 kilometers northeast of the city of San Felipe, was recorded at a depth of 21.9 kilometers.

Following the devastation, Venezuela's Interim President Delcy Rodriguez stepped in front of the cameras to announce a state of emergency across the country. Rodriguez indicated that thus far, at least 20 significant aftershocks have been recorded, leading to the collapse of numerous buildings in several provinces, including but not limited to the capital, Caracas, as well as Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua, Carabobo, and Falcon.

On the other hand, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello stated that a precise official figure regarding the loss of life and property could not yet be provided, primarily due to the complete collapse of the internet and communication infrastructure in some cities. Cabello further revealed that the roof of the International Maiquetia Airport in the capital had collapsed, resulting in the suspension of all flights within the country until further notice.
