Ultimate Formula Revealed to Keep Your Houseplants Alive in Scorching Summer Heat
As the sweltering summer heat engulfs the country in the final days of June, it's not just us who are feeling the strain, but also our green companions at home. Don't let the drying soil and wilting leaves get you down; there's a single, simple method recommended by experts to shield your plants from the heatwave: watering from the bottom.
We've compiled the formula to keep your houseplants and fresh flowers vibrant in the scorching summer heat, with tips shared by flower and plant expert Lucy Hook.
Here is the method you absolutely need to implement this summer and its benefits...
Why Should You Water From Below, Not From Above?
1. Prevents Water Runoff
In hot weather, the potting soil can become compacted and turn 'hydrophobic,' meaning it can repel water. The water you pour from the top can run off the sides without being absorbed, failing to reach the roots. Bottom watering, on the other hand, allows the water to be drawn up through the pot's holes, evenly moistening the entire soil. (This is particularly vital for plants that are thirsty.)
2. Strengthens and Deepens Roots
When water is available at the bottom, plant roots are encouraged to grow downwards to reach the moisture. This, in turn, strengthens the overall structure of the plant. (Especially fast-growing plants appreciate this support.)
3. Prevents Leaf Damage and Rot
In hot weather, water splashing onto the leaves can invite mold, harmful insects, and rot. Thanks to bottom watering, the leaves stay dry and safe.
4. Reduces Heat Shock
Pouring cold water directly onto hot soil on a scorching day can shock plant roots. Bottom watering allows the plant to absorb moisture in a gradual and gentle manner. (This doesn't cause stress in sensitive species like ferns and Peperomia.)
5. Ideal for Vacation Periods
Soil watered from the bottom retains moisture for a longer period. This allows you to extend watering intervals during hot weather or while you're on vacation.
This straightforward procedure will only take a few minutes of your time to implement at home:
1. Step: Position your pot, which must have drainage holes, in a shallow basin, bowl, or sink filled with about 57 cm of water.
2. Step: Allow the plant to sit in the water for between 15 to 30 minutes, or until the soil at the top of the pot feels moist.
3. Step: Remove the plant from the water. To prevent root rot, be sure to empty any excess water that has collected in the saucer of the pot.
4. Step: Repeat this process every two to three weeks as needed, or alternatively, you can implement it in rotation with top watering if you prefer.
