Turning Agricultural Waste Into Insulation: Rice Straw Project GO STRAWMAT Transmutes Homes
Rice straw left as waste in the field is being transformed into insulation material through the GO STRAWMAT project being conducted in Europe. The project aims to convert rice straw (paddy straw) into heat-insulated and fire-resistant materials that can be used in the construction sector. This could increase the economic value of this by-product produced in rice cultivation.

The Rice Straw Left in the Field Will Be Used in Home Construction
After the rice harvest, the remaining stalks are often left in the field, burned, or mixed into the soil. The GO STRAWMAT project, announced by the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform in 2025, aims to reuse this waste and use it in the construction industry.
The project conducted in Europe focuses on developing more sustainable building materials while bringing an agricultural by-product into the economy.
Insulation Material to be Produced from Rice Straw
The project is working on transforming rice straw into heat-insulating and fire-resistant materials.
Indeed, the silica and lignin contained in the rice straw allow the material to stand out in terms of both insulation and fire resistance. The aim is for the products to be developed to serve as alternatives to petroleum-based insulation products such as polystyrene and polyurethane used in buildings.
Rice Harvesting Method Can Also Change
New methods for collecting rice straw will also be developed with the project. Especially around Albufera in the Valencia region of Spain, rice fields can be submerged underwater after harvest. This situation makes it difficult to collect the straws.
Therefore, within the scope of GO STRAWMAT, work is being done on methods and machines that can also collect wet rice straw. It is planned to dry and process the collected straws and turn them into building materials.
Can Also Be Used in Building Renovations
It is aimed to use the materials to be developed within the scope of GO STRAWMAT not only in new buildings but also in building renovation and energy efficiency studies.
La UNIÓ, AGROBELGA, AIMPLAS, and Cesefor are working together on the project. The study is among the projects aimed at circular economy and re-evaluation of agricultural waste in Europe.
The use of rice straw in the construction sector is not yet a widespread practice. Research and development studies within the scope of GO STRAWMAT are ongoing.
