Turkish Cinema Icon Hülya Koçyiğit Reacts to the New TV Adaptation of Golden Bear Winner Susuz Yaz
Hülya Koçyiğit, remembered as the unforgettable Bahar of Turkey's classic Yeşilçam era, spoke about the new TV adaptation of Necati Cumalı's Susuz Yaz (Dry Summer) while answering Asiye Acar's questions on Kanal D's program Pazar Gezmesi. The veteran actress, who calls the film her 'first love,' shared how she felt after watching the newly released trailer and the question still on her mind.
Hülya Koçyiğit was just 15 when she played Bahar in Susuz Yaz.
Often named alongside Türkan Şoray, Fatma Girik and Filiz Akın as one of Yeşilçam's 'four-leaf clover,' Hülya Koçyiğit opened one of the brightest chapters of her career at the age of 15. In Metin Erksan's 1963 film Susuz Yaz, adapted from Necati Cumalı's story, she starred alongside Erol Taş and Ulvi Doğan as Bahar, a young woman caught in the shadow of a man who wants to keep the village's water all to himself.
A Golden Bear and a Lifelong Bond
The film won the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival in 1964, earning its place in Turkish film history and opening the door to a long, award-filled career for Hülya Koçyiğit. She was named a State Artist in 1991, and her attachment to Susuz Yaz has not faded in more than 60 years.
"I got excited," Hülya Koçyiğit said after watching the new trailer.
In the interview, Hülya Koçyiğit once again described Susuz Yaz as her 'first love.' She said she was aware the story would return to the screen as a Kanal D series more than half a century later and wished the project good luck.
Pointing to the work's literary value, she noted that even people who have not seen the film have read Necati Cumalı's story, and that the film holds a very important place in Turkish cinema history. Of the trailer, she said: 'I got excited, actually. Of course I hope it turns out very well.'
What she wanted to know most was whether the series would tell the story in its original period or move it to the present day. On learning that it would portray life in that era, she said: 'Then I'm curious too.'
For Hülya Koçyiğit, the heart of the story is a fight over water.
Looking back at the period the story is set in, Hülya Koçyiğit said it was 'so primitive it cannot be compared with today's Turkey.' She recalled that the conflict centers on who owns the water: the owner of the vineyard claims it belongs to him alone, while the villagers argue it is the right of the whole village, and his brother sides with them. Of Bahar, caught in the middle, she said: 'With all her innocence and her faith, she realizes the wrong, but by then it is too late.'
The New Cast
In Kanal D's series, Lizge Cömert plays Bahar, Mert Ramazan Demir takes a lead role, and Batuhan Bozkurt Yüzügüleç plays the character modeled on the film's ruthless older brother. Filming began in Adana in October. Kanal D has not officially announced a premiere date; screenwriter Sema Ergenekon had said she expects the series to air in mid or late November.
