They Lowered 10,000-Ton Blocks into the Sea to Build a New District
Due to its limited land area, Monaco has resorted to an unconventional method to expand. With the implementation of the Mareterra project on the Mediterranean coast, a new living area has been established where there was once sea. As part of the project, 18 giant concrete structures were placed on the coast, which were transformed into a large sea barrier, forming the foundation of the new district.
The fact that Monaco's total area is just slightly over 2 square kilometers, further underscores the need for such an expansion.
Eighteen giant concrete blocks were placed at the bottom of the sea.
The colossal concrete structures utilized in the project were not produced directly on the coast of Monaco. These blocks, prepared in special facilities, were transported over the Mediterranean by floating them, and then carefully lowered to the predetermined location.
These concrete structures function like a massive barrier under the sea. While protecting the newly formed area from waves and coastal erosion, they also provide a solid foundation for the district to be built above. In other words, the primary support of Mareterra comes from this gigantic engineering system submerged underwater.
A new habitat has emerged where the sea exists.
Mareterra is not merely a vacant space obtained by filling the sea. The project incorporates luxury residences, green spaces, walking paths, public areas, a marina, and coastal infrastructure all planned together.
In this regard, Monaco has accomplished far more than just erecting a few buildings over the sea. An area that was once open sea has now transformed into a new district with streets, gardens, buildings, and social spaces.
The project was closely monitored due to its environmental impacts.
Establishing a new area over the sea has sparked environmental debates. Efforts have been made to mitigate the impacts on water quality, marine life, and vegetation due to the marine ecosystem in the region.
The relocation of certain marine species and the environmental monitoring of the construction process also featured prominently in the project.
