Susanoglu Travel Guide: Explore the Cave Entrance to Hell

Susanoglu, a neighbourhood of Mersin, a port city located in the Mediterranean Region, is connected to the Silifke district. Susanoglu neighbourhood, situated 15 kilometres from the centre of the district it connects to, lies approximately 67 kilometres from the Mersin city centre.

Caves of Cennet-Cehennem

Caves of Cennet-Cehennem

Located 25 kilometres from the district centre, 2 kilometres northwest of the ancient Narlıkuyu Port and 5 kilometres west of Korykos (Kızkalesi), these caves were shaped over many years by underground waters that dissolved the limestone layer, ultimately leading to the collapse of the ceiling structure due to the discharge of water inside.

Cennet Obruk

The mouth of the elliptical paradise sinkhole measures 250 x 110 metres, while its depth is 70 metres.

Hell Obruk

Situated 75 metres north of the Cennet cave, the entrance of the Cehennem Obruğu measures 75x50 metres, with a depth of 128 metres.

Astım Cave

Astım Cave

Located 600 metres northwest of the Cennet-Cehennem cave, Astım Cave is one of the prominent sites that showcase the geographical features of the region and is regarded as a natural wonder. The air within this cave, believed to be beneficial for asthma patients, has inspired numerous legends.

Access to the Astım Cave interior is via a spiral iron staircase. The cave, formed during the third geological period, has a depth of 15 metres.

Mezgit Castle

Mezgit Castle

While this structure, referred to in literature as the Tomb of the Fearless Satrap, is generally known as a castle, it is in fact a monumental tomb. The height of this structure is comparable to that of a six-storey building. It was studied by Professor Levent Zoroglu in 1987.

Castle Paslı

Castle Paslı

Dating back to the 2nd century BC, Paslı City was founded by the Teukros Dynasty and the Seleucids collaborating. The life that began in the area known as Olba Teritorium started with the City of Paslı and continued to expand during the Roman period. Remnants of castle walls have been discovered along the edges of the city of Paslı, alongside remains of houses, agricultural towers, cisterns, tombs and the Heroon Structure, whose upper part has collapsed.

Hasanaliler Church

Hasanaliler Church

Believed to have been constructed in the 6th century during the Byzantine Empire, Hasanaliler Church is designed in a basilical style and is thought to encompass three aisles. Although it has few remaining ruins from its construction, it has been preserved remarkably well over the centuries.
