Don't feel like going out, and it's just the two of you at home? No need to scroll endlessly for something to do. Some of the best evenings start with a board, a deck of cards or nothing more than a few rules everyone can learn in a minute. Here are easy games for two that work at any age.

Start with the classics that reward a bit of strategy.

Start with the classics that reward a bit of strategy.

Chess

Sixty-four squares and endless possibilities. Each player starts with sixteen pieces, black or white, and the game is won by checkmating the opponent's king. That is rarely as easy as it sounds, which is exactly the fun of it.

Jenga

Two players are enough for this test of steady hands. Players take turns pulling a block from the tower, and whoever topples it loses. Many couples add their own twist, such as pairing each block with a truth-or-dare question.

Ludo and card games are quick to learn and easy to love.

Ludo

Playable with two to four people, Ludo is often one of the first board games we ever learn. Each player has four pawns, moves them around the board by rolling the dice, and wins by getting all four home first.

Card games

Uno and Monopoly Deal are easy picks, and a regular deck opens up dozens more, from Old Maid to solitaire-style challenges. Make up your own house rules, rewards or forfeits to keep things interesting.

Hot and cold

No winners, no losers, just laughs. One player hides an object and the other searches for it, guided only by 'warmer' when getting closer and 'colder' when moving away.

Backgammon, word games and a few no-equipment favorites round out the list.

Backgammon

In its simplest terms, the winner is the first player to bear off all their checkers from a board of twenty-four narrow triangles. The dice are your best friend and worst enemy, which keeps every minute exciting.

The 'boom' game

No cards or board needed. Pick a number, say five. Players count up in turns, but on five or any multiple of five they must say 'boom' instead. Say the number by mistake and you lose.

Yes-no game

The name is a trap: whoever says 'yes' or 'no' loses. One player fires off questions on any topic until the other slips, then the roles switch.

Word games

Play a board game like Scrabble, or keep it simple: name words that start with a chosen letter, or take turns saying a word that begins with the last letter of the previous one.

Video games

With a gamepad connected to a computer, TV or phone, you can race, play sports or battle it out together. Many online multiplayer games also let you team up as a duo.
