SEGA is now joining forces with Roblox game developer Gamefam to bring an official Sonic the Hedgehog game on the popular platform. Players around the world will be able to play the new game on April 14.
Gamefam is a game development studio that creates high-quality Roblox games. They were also the first to use Roblox as a platform for video game development. They teamed up with SEGA to release a new game called 'Sonic Speed Simulator,' which is inspired by SEGA's original Sonic the Hedgehog game.
Unlike most simulator games in Roblox, Sonic Speed Simulator will be an open-world roleplaying type of game. The players’ speed in the game will be determined by their in-game steps and also by collecting items such as Chaos Orbs that will further increase their speed. The game was released after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 recently premiered in theaters.
Sonic Speed Simulator will feature four different locations for players to explore. In addition, a fifth area and bosses will be included in a future update. Unlike the generic boxy models that you can play as in Roblox, the game includes unique 3D models of popular Sonic characters such as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles that you can play as. In addition, the game will include exclusive Sonic-themed collectibles that you can use to customize your Roblox character.
“When you get the speed, this game feels like Sonic,” Gamefam CEO Joe Ferencz said. “That is something our producers, designers, and animators know how to do, but we needed Sega’s expert Sonic guidance on it.” Gamefam has previously worked with well-known brands such as Ubisoft and Mattel to create Roblox games.
“I think people have a lot of notions about what Roblox is, and what Roblox is and isn’t,” Ferencz said. “If people are Sonic fans, we want them to come in and try this game. Even if they’re never tried Roblox.” This might possibly attract Sonic fans to try out Roblox which will also greatly benefit the Roblox team.
