After a saucy or oily meal, a greasy film can cling to plastic food containers and prove stubborn to remove, even with a sponge. One method that’s been viewed millions of times on social media promises to get rid of it with just a minute of shaking.

All you need for this method is dish soap, warm water, and a paper towel.
Fill the container about one-third full with warm water and add a few drops of dish soap. Tear a sheet of paper towel into several pieces, drop them in, and seal the lid tightly.
Shake the container vigorously in every direction for at least a minute. If any greasy residue remains on the sides, keep shaking. Then rinse the container with warm water.

People who tried it found that a container coated with olive oil came out spotless after just 50 seconds of shaking. Washing the same container with a sponge took longer and still left a slight greasy film on the surface.
Choosing the right detergent and water temperature can make all the difference.
Hand soap isn’t effective at cutting through grease, so use a grease-cutting dish soap instead. Cold water usually won’t remove stains, while very hot or boiling water can warp the plastic.
Cleaning containers right after use also helps keep grease and stains from setting in.
Soaking it in baking soda water can help lift old, stubborn stains.
For containers with stubborn, long-standing stains, soak them in a baking soda solution for an hour or overnight, then clean them using the same method. You can also spray the container with diluted vinegar and let it sit, though the smell may linger.
If the greasy residue still won’t come off, or the container is cracked or warped, it’s time to replace it.
