Search for Lost Hammer Leads to Discovery of 15,000 Ancient Artifacts
A retired man in the UK, who took up his metal detector to search for a hammer his friend had lost in a field, stumbled upon the largest Roman treasure in the country. This massive collection, which attracts thousands of visitors each year at the British Museum, also led to a complete overhaul of the treasure laws in England.
An incident that took place in the Suffolk region of England in 1992 marked one of the most intriguing discoveries in the history of archaeology.
Tenant farmer Peter Whatling, having lost his hammer in his field, sought help from his friend Eric Lawes who had received a metal detector as a retirement gift. Upon starting the search in the field, Lawes began to dig when his detector signaled something below; however, instead of a hammer, a gold coin emerged from the earth.
As the search continued, the two friends discovered more gold, silver, and jewelry. They promptly halted the excavation and reported the situation to the authorities. To prevent looters from swarming the area, the Suffolk Archaeology Unit covertly transported all the blocks from the field to the laboratory in a clandestine operation.
The details of the discovery, dubbed the "Hoxne Hoard," left the scientific community astounded.
The colossal treasure, weighing in at a total of 60 pounds (approximately 27 kg), comprised of the following:
14,780 gold, silver, and bronze coins,
200 pieces of pure gold jewelry and silver tableware,
Silver bowls, ladles, and spoons, separately packaged for male and female use,
A silver pepper pot, known as the 'Hoxne Empress,' designed for dispensing pepper, believed to have originated from India.
Experts have determined that the items were meticulously wrapped in leather-covered wooden boxes and fabrics within an oak chest, and have been preserved as if they were packaged just yesterday, despite being around 1500 years old.
Upon examination, it was discerned that the coins were minted between the years 394 and 405 AD.
Archaeologists have concluded that the treasure was buried between the years 408 and 450 AD. This period coincides with a turbulent era when Roman soldiers withdrew from Britain, leaving the region vulnerable to invasions. It is believed that a wealthy family buried their fortune in the ground, intending to retrieve it once stability returned, but they were never able to return.
This discovery not only made a significant impact on archaeology but also on the legal system. The magnitude of the find led to the enactment of the 1996 Treasure Act, modernizing England's 300-year-old laws on buried treasure and artifacts. With the new law, assurance was given for a reward to be given to the finder and landowner in the event that the discovered treasures were handed over to museums. Eric Lawes received the invaluable worth assigned to the treasure and shared it with his friend Whatling.
Archaeologists, after the excavation of the treasure, managed to find the hammer that Whatling had lost, in the detailed digs they conducted in the field.
Today, right next to the staggering Roman gold artifacts worth millions of pounds on display at the British Museum, the iron hammer that sparked it all off is also proudly exhibited.
