Engaging in a bit of gossip together might be providing more benefits than you think. A total of 76 romantic couples were monitored throughout the day with a recording device named EAR, capturing their natural conversation moments. The average daily gossip time was measured to be 38 minutes, of which 29 minutes were dedicated to chats with their partners.

The team did not label gossip as either good or bad. It could be a sweet compliment about someone else or a slightly prickly comment. The presence of sharing was what mattered. Lead author Chandler Spahr emphasized that gossip is everywhere and this fact should not be ignored.

The data indicated that a shared appraisal boosted personal happiness and enhanced the quality of relationships.

When couples discuss events together, their emotional alignment and sense of trust are strengthened. The researchers referred to this as the feeling of being on the same team. Senior author Megan Robbins illustrated this with a simple example from everyday life, explaining that revisiting who said what at a party together can foster a connection.

The same study reported that homosexual couples exhibited higher levels of well-being. Female couples ranked at the top both in total gossip time and relationship satisfaction.

Expert Shamyra Howard pointed out that these shares enhance emotional and social closeness. Even those who are not prone to gossip can generate a similar effect. You could discuss a brief summary of the day. You might react together to a series or news you've watched.

You can reminisce about a past holiday and plan a new one. You could point out to each other the striking details on the street or in the neighborhood. You can initiate an exchange of opinions with random questions. The important thing is that you are regularly sharing a small world that belongs to two people.
