The Governor of Ardahan, who made headlines as the 'leggings-wearing governor' due to his sportswear while cycling, had sparked debates in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Following his removal from office, Governor Mehmet Fatih Çiçekli, who was singled out by the words 'Such a person cannot be a governor' from a deputy of the Republican People's Party, made a statement.

Ardahan Governor Mehmet Fatih Çiçekli had made headlines with his attire while cycling. The tight outfit worn by Çiçekli was brought up in the Turkish Grand National Assembly by CHP Kars Deputy İnan Akgün Alp, who targeted him with the words 'This is not how a governor should be'. Alp's words stirred up a debate in the Assembly, while a decision published in the Official Gazette caught attention. Ardahan Governor Mehmet Fatih Çiçekli was dismissed from his post with the signature of President Erdoğan.
Following his dismissal, Çiçekli spoke to Meral Danyıldız from BirGün newspaper. Mehmet Fatih Çiçekli stated, 'I will carry on pedaling. I am a sailing and rowing athlete. I am a cyclist. The outfit I wear is sports attire. I do sports in sports attire. The decision is at the discretion of my superiors.'
"It's an athletic outfit that I wear while exercising. We don't go around dressed in this attire during our regular workdays, throughout the week."
Çiçekli emphasized that his attire was not casual leggings, but cycling gear. 'I am someone who practices various sports at a level close to professional. In fact, I am almost a professional. The outfit I am wearing is the sports gear I use for exercising in the mornings. It's what I wear when I work out. We don't walk around in this attire during our regular working hours or during the week. We don't and we won't. We engage in this sport very early on weekends. This will be clearly seen. In other words, we do sports in sports attire,' he said.
Çiçekli continued his words as follows:
'I am not someone who does sports just for the sake of it, for appearances, or for image. What I will do from now on is to engage in more sports. This decision is at the discretion of my seniors. They have decided. Long live our state and nation. Recep Yazıcıoğlu, one of the veteran names in our profession, was also subjected to many similar accusations while he was alive. May God bless him abundantly. He is still an inspiration for us. A great example. When he was alive, he was a governor who faced very similar, even worse accusations. Now he is remembered with kindness. We still benefit from the inspiration he gives us. He is our greatest source of inspiration.'
