Rihanna Wins Trademark Battle in Turkish Court
It has been revealed that world-renowned singer Rihanna has filed two separate lawsuits against individuals in Turkey who registered her name without her permission. The company founded by the famous artist from Barbados sought legal action after discovering that her name and popular nickname were registered by another party in Turkey. Meanwhile, it has been reported that Rihanna has won her lawsuits.

According to official court decisions reached by Said Sürücü, who shares posts under the username 'yapayzekahocasi' on social media platform X, Rihanna's company has filed two separate lawsuits in Turkey to protect its rights.
The company, founded by the famous Barbadian artist, appealed to the court after its name and popular nickname were registered by another party in Turkey.
The plaintiff company, which holds official trademark registrations with the Turkish Patent and Marka Kurumu under the name 'Rihanna' in 2012, and with the famous artist's synonymous nickname 'Riri' in 2015, initiated a legal battle against a new registration application made with the phrase 'RIANNA'.
In court, the defense argued, "Rianna means 'beautiful scent' in Arabic."
In the petition presented to the court by the plaintiff company's attorney, it was emphasized that the artist from Barbados is a globally recognized name, and that the 'RIANNA' brand bears almost identical characteristics to the registered name, with a single letter change insufficient to differentiate the brand. It was stated that the unauthorized use of the artist's name would lead to unjust enrichment and cause confusion among consumers.
The defendant, on the other hand, defended themselves with an intriguing rationale. In their response petition, the defendant's attorney pointed out that their brand includes an ear of grain figure on a red background, arguing that there is no visual or auditory similarity.
The defendant claimed that the term 'Rianna' is actually of Arabic origin, meaning 'beautiful scent, basil, sweet basil,' and has no connection whatsoever with the world-famous singer Rihanna, thereby requesting the dismissal of the case.
The Court of First Instance ruled that, despite the letter difference, an average consumer could associate the terms 'Rianna' and 'Rihanna' with each other. The decision included the acceptance of the lawsuit and the annulment of the brand registered in the defendant's name. The court highlighted that this situation carried the risk of unjust enrichment from the plaintiff's well-known brand and damaging the distinctive character of the brand.

On the other hand, it was revealed that world-renowned American pop star Beyonce had filed a similar lawsuit in Turkey. The process began when it was discovered that Beyonce's name rights had been officially registered as a brand by third parties in Turkey. In the nullity lawsuits filed through the famous star's lawyers, it was emphasized that the term 'Beyoncé' has high global recognition and that unauthorized use would create unfair competition.
