Liberland, a self-proclaimed state in the disputed Gornja Siga region between Serbia and Croatia, which has not been recognized by the international community, has come back into the spotlight due to citizenship applications. According to the founder Vit Jedlicka, more than 800,000 people have applied for citizenship to date. The promise of low taxes and limited government intervention is particularly appealing to affluent figures in the world of technology and cryptocurrency. On the other hand, the Croatian government does not acknowledge the claim that the region is an independent state.

Known as the 'Free Republic of Liberland,' this entity is located in the Gornja Siga region, where the border dispute between Serbia and Croatia continues. The establishment of Liberland on this land, approximately 16.8 square kilometers, was declared in 2015 by Vit Jedlicka of Czech origin. However, despite the passing decade, the entity has not been officially recognized as an independent state on the international stage.
Nevertheless, the Liberland administration argues that the uncertainty regarding recognition has not diminished interest in the project. According to information provided by Jedlicka, over 800,000 applications have been made for Liberland citizenship to date. According to a report in T24, a significant portion of the applicants are individuals who embrace a governance philosophy that minimizes state intervention and maintains low taxes. Liberland has its own governance structure and documents it accepts as constitutional; the entity charges fees for residence permits and applies certain financial conditions for citizenship acceptance.

One of the prominent reasons for the interest in Liberland is the connection established with the project by some wealthy figures from the technology and cryptocurrency sectors. According to The Telegraph, there are numerous billionaires from the tech world among those supporting the formation. Justin Sun, a well-known name in the cryptocurrency sector, is also touted among the backers associated with Liberland.
In the economic model of the formation, low tax rates and limited government regulations are prioritized, while a digital token called 'Liberland Merits' is used in the administrative system. The founder, Jedlicka, argues that those who contribute more to the project should have more say in decision-making processes; this approach significantly deviates from the traditional understanding of state governance.
The biggest problem Liberland faces is the legal status of the Gornja Siga region where it was declared to be founded. The Croatian government does not accept the claim that Liberland is an independent state, and the de facto control in the region is in the hands of Croatian authorities. In past years, the Croatian police have organized operations to remove some structures in the region, and controls on entries and exits to the peninsula have also been increased.
