Born in Istanbul, Uğur was the fifth child of his father, Hurşit Uğur, who worked as a chief engineer in Şehir Hatları. His early interest in music was sparked when he was introduced to the mandolin while studying at Reşat Nuri Güntekin Primary School. His passion for music further deepened during his time at Fenerbahçe High School, leading him to form an amateur group named 'Atomikler' where they performed popular songs of that time.

Uğur embarked on his professional musical journey in 1970 as part of the Şerif Yüzbaşıoğlu Orchestra, which saw numerous famous musicians among its members over time. In 1971, he met Mazhar Alanson and Fuat Güner in Kızıltoprak, with whom he formed the first group Kaygısızlar, beginning his career as a professional bass guitarist. After a brief period, the group disbanded, following which Uğur joined the rock group Kurtalan Ekspres formed by Barış Manço in 1972.

Collaborations, Fame, and Eurovision Success

In the ensuing years, Uğur was involved in numerous collaborations, forming various groups like Ter with Aydın Çakuş and Nur Yenal, and Grup Karma with Galip Boransu and Cengiz Teoman. However, his fame rose to significant heights when he, Mazhar Alanson, and Fuat Güner came together as MFÖ (Mazhar-Fuat-Özkan) in the 1980s. The trio was popularly known for their exceptional performances in the Eurovision Song Contest, representing Turkey twice, in 1985 with 'Diday Diday Day' and in 1988 with 'Sufi'.

Apart from his instrumental prowess, Uğur's impressive vocal range, including his ability to perform high tenor, added an additional layer of depth to MFÖ's music. Notably, he composed several popular songs for the group, including 'Lay Lili Lili Lay', 'Mecburen', 'No Problem', and 'New York Sokaklarında'. He was also known for his distinctive style of creating songs with nonsensical lyrics that held an unmistakable charm.

Solo Career

Despite being the only member of his group not to release a solo album, Uğur's solo work includes soundtracks for films like 'Karışık Pizza' and 'G.O.R.A.'. He also contributed to albums from artists like Sezen Aksu, Tarkan, Aşkın Nur Yengi, Nev, Yavuz Çetin, Baba Zula, Ayhan Sicimoğlu, and Asya. Uğur's musical range was reflected in his various roles, from composing music for Ayşegül Aldinç's songs to penning lyrics for Sertab Erener's 'Kera' and Yavuz Çetin's 'Fanki Tonki Zonki'. He also released the single 'Aynada' in 2016.
