Man Stages His Own Funeral to Avoid Prison, Flees as Empty Coffin Is Buried
A man in China, caught driving under the influence, staged his own death to escape the impending punishment. He took a photo of himself in a cooled-down coffin while his family unknowingly buried an empty one, as he fled hundreds of kilometers away. His months-long scheme was eventually uncovered due to the police's suspicion over odd details at the funeral.
He was caught for the third time driving under the influence of alcohol.
The man known only by the surname Si was apprehended in January 2025 in Henan province, China, for driving under the influence. Upon investigation, it was discovered that he had previously been penalized twice for driving without a license and while intoxicated. While the investigation continued, he was released on bail.
In China, the offense of reckless driving can lead to license revocation, fines, and detention ranging from one to six months. Si, burdened with debts, feared that another conviction would completely derail his life, leading him to decide to disappear.
He chilled his body to make his death look convincing.
Indeed, in June 2025, he purchased a coffin online and scattered empty medicine bottles around different parts of his house. He held his breath to mimic the appearance of death by poisoning and used cooling equipment to lower his body temperature. His mother and grandmother then falsely reported to the authorities that Si had died from drug overdose.
Claiming that Si's face had been disfigured due to the poison, the family kept his head covered throughout the funeral. It was stated that only his mother and grandmother had seen Si and the empty coffin was buried the same day. While the funeral was being arranged, Si, who had fled to the Yunnan province, planned to find a job there and start a new life.
The empty coffin and missing documents exposed his plan.
The family's failure to call an ambulance for Si, the pre-purchase of the coffin, and the hasty removal of the funeral caught the attention of the police. Moreover, there was no official document indicating a death certificate, cremation record, or deletion of population registration. None of the neighbors who attended the funeral had seen Si's face either.
Upon examining security camera footage, bank transactions, and phone records, the police determined that Si was alive. After approximately 10 months of searching, the man was apprehended in April 2026 and was sentenced to five months of detention and a fine of 20,000 yuan. An investigation was also launched into his mother and grandmother, who had assisted in the execution of the plan, on suspicion of harboring a criminal.
