Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk, and The Underground Railroad director Barry Jenkins is seemingly without fault, so of course, he has a lot of attention from various producers and has racked up a lot of projects. Here’s everything this amazing director is rumored to be working on.
‘The Lion King’ Prequel
Jenkins’ next directorial feature may be a film detailing the origins of The Lion King character Mufasa, father of the original film's main character Simba. No other details are released yet, including whether Mufasa’s returning voice actor James Earl Jones will join the cast this time around.
‘Virunga’ Adaptation
Virunga stood out as one of the best documentaries of the 2010s, so it was only a matter of time before someone adapted it into a narrative feature film. The original version follows the humble protectors of the Congo’s Virunga National Park, whose conservation work is impeded by the M23 Rebellion in 2012 and scheming British oil companies.
Claressa Shields Biopic
Barry Jenkins’ screenplay Flint Strong is on the books as the directorial debut of cinematographer Rachel Morrison. Ryan Destiny will star as the boxer training for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Jenkins produces the film with three-time Oscar nominees Michael De Luca.
Alvin Ailey Biopic
Choreographer Alvin Ailey, who founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, is overdue for a biopic, so Jenkins will allegedly be directing one.
‘True Detective’ Season 4 Involvement
Barry Jenkins is only attached to the new season of the infamous anthology series as an executive producer, but more exciting additions are Issa Lopez as a writer and director.
