The experiences of a young architect who had his phone stolen during a trip to Istanbul shed light on the significant threat facing smartphone users. A professional fraud network, relentlessly pursuing stolen devices, employs an inconceivable method to target victims. The young architect revealed that the thieves send fraudulent messages that appear to be from Apple to the owners of the stolen phones. He further explained that users who click on the link in the message and enter their iCloud information end up losing control over their phones.

Approximately a month ago, during her trip to Istanbul, 37-year-old architect Incilay Tuygun had her iPhone stolen. She detailed the organized scamming process that ensued following the theft. Immediately after her phone was stolen, the gang members, exploiting the emergency and medical ID information on the device, managed to reach Tuygun's family. A man, introducing himself as a well-intentioned 'phone dealer', assured the family that he would assist in recovering the stolen device.

Tuygun emphasized that the scammers' real intention was not to return the phone, but to unlock it and take full control. She described how the system worked as follows:

'He tried to help via a link he sent. Since I have another Apple device, we locked the phone through that device. However, the link sent by the man who claimed to be a phone dealer appears to open Apple's own page. The moment you enter information on the page that opens, the control of the phone falls into the hands of the scammers.

We didn't fall for this trap, but there are many people who have been victimized by this method. We have prepared a video on this subject on social media. There are many people who have lost their phones and been victimized by clicking on that link and entering their iCloud password.

This gang is said to operate in Istanbul, Adana, Aksaray, and Bursa. We want this situation to be stopped. After your phone is stolen, they call you, introduce themselves as phone dealers, and send a link. The moment you click on the link and enter your iCloud password, they take control of the phone. Then they reset the phone and sell it to someone else,' she said.

Tuygun, emphasizing that the scammers constantly update their methods, added, 'We also shared these numbers in the video we prepared on social media. The messages look like they are coming from Apple and Microsoft. There were numbers used before, but they have updated their methods and the numbers they use.'

Large network in four provinces: They keep changing their numbers constantly.

The young architect, who managed to avoid this professional scam but witnessed hundreds of others fall victim to the same method, decided to take the issue to social media and created a warning video. Following the video, Tuygun stated that they received similar complaints from all over Turkey, thereby uncovering the map of the organized crime network.

According to the information obtained, the fraud gang does not operate from a single center. A robust network has been established in major cities such as Istanbul, Adana, Aksaray, and Bursa. The members of the network, in order to gain the users' trust, mask their short text messages (SMS) as if they were coming from reliable companies like Apple or Microsoft. Moreover, they continuously update the phone numbers and redirection links they use to avoid detection. Phones whose iCloud passwords have been seized are remotely reset by the gang, removed from lost/stolen status, and then sold to other people in the second-hand market at exorbitant prices.
