House Sinks 2 Meters Underground to Escape the Heat and Rotates 180 Degrees
Bohumil Lhota, a resident of the Czech Republic, dedicated nearly two decades to constructing a structure quite unlike ordinary homes. His nine-meter diameter circular house can rotate to adjust to the view and can be lowered approximately two meters underground.
He completed the circular house in approximately 20 years.
Lhota commenced the construction of the house near Velké Hamry in 1981. The builder, who nestled the structure into the hillside, designed a circular living space that could move around the central supporting system.
Lhota, occasionally assisted by his friends, completed a significant part of the house on his own. He acquired some parts used in the movement mechanism from scrap materials and adapted them to fit the structure.
The house can rotate 180 degrees according to the view.
The house, which moves on a central axis, can be rotated up to 180 degrees with the purpose of changing the direction of the windows. This allows living spaces to be positioned according to the sun, wind, or the view that the homeowner wishes to see.
Moreover, the structure can also be lowered approximately two meters. The proximity of the house to the ground provides the advantage of utilizing the natural insulation of the earth, particularly against temperature changes and harsh winds.
It features a swimming pool, a winter garden, and an observatory dome.
A circular pool is situated around the central load-bearing system of the house. The winter garden is home to a variety of plants such as ferns, ivy, figs, kiwi, and pomegranate, while the transparent dome is used for observing the surroundings.
A passage leading to the studio and garage from underground reduces the need to go outside during heavy snowfall. Solar collectors on the roof heat the pool water, and the project won the Energy Globe environmental award in the Czech Republic in 2012.
