Get Out Greedy: Man Damages Home Bought for $675K and Listed for $1.6 Million
In the state of Utah, USA, an individual infuriated by real estate speculators vandalized a luxury home that was bought cheaply months ago and put back on the market with a hefty profit margin. The act of vandalism, created by an unidentified person who spray-painted 'Greedy speculators, get lost' on the house's wall, reignited discussions about the housing crisis on social media.
An extraordinary real estate case in the United States has laid bare the tension between the free market and the housing crisis.
In September 2021, a real estate investor purchased a detached house, with three bedrooms and approximately 198 square meters of living space, located in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City, in the state of Utah, for $675,000.
The investor, who bought the house, immediately embarked on a major renovation. Following a luxurious restoration process, during which walls were torn down, supporting beams were added, and the kitchen was completely revamped, the house was relaunched on the market just eight months later, in May 2022, for a staggering $1.6 million. This massive $925,000 difference between the initial purchase price and the new sales price sparked a significant backlash from local house hunters.
However, it remains unknown how much of this difference ended up as net profit in the investor's pocket; as costs such as financing, heavy construction expenses, real estate commissions, and taxes were not publicly disclosed.
While the sales process was ongoing, the luxury residence was attacked by an unidentified individual in the middle of the night.
The aggressor sprayed harshly worded messages on the exterior wall of the house with pink spray paint, criticizing the astronomical price increase. The perpetrator, accusing the investor of being a 'greedy real estate speculator', expressed his anger by writing 'Get lost, greedy' on the wall.
The incident went viral worldwide when local realtor Becca Summers, who was not involved in the process, uploaded videos showing the vandalism and luxury modifications made to the house.
A heated debate ensued under the videos that garnered millions of views:
Home Seekers' Rebellion: Many users criticized the artificial inflation of house prices and expressed their frustration with the real estate market, which made home ownership impossible for young families.
Property Rights Advocates: On the other hand, another group emphasized the homeowner's right to set whatever price they wanted for their property, and strongly condemned any act of damaging property, regardless of the circumstances.
The Salt Lake City Police Department confirmed that an official report was filed in response to a vandalism complaint at the address on May 14, 2022, and an investigation has been initiated.
Despite some social media posts claiming that 'the entire neighborhood had gathered to loot the house collectively,' police records did not corroborate this allegation, instead focusing on the possibility that the act was committed by a single perpetrator.
In spite of all the spray-painted protests and social media backlash, the real estate investor did not back down. According to the information released, the luxury residence, which had stirred up a storm, eventually managed to find a buyer at the announced price of 1.6 million dollars.
