In a groundbreaking step for electric transportation, France has equipped a 1.5-kilometer stretch of the A10 highway near Paris with a wireless system that allows electric vehicles to charge while on the move.

With the first wireless-charging highway, it's possible to transmit power up to 300 kW in just a matter of minutes.

The magnetic field, created by 900 copper coils embedded approximately 10 centimeters beneath the road surface, wirelessly transmits energy to vehicles. The system's maximum transmission capacity is 300 kW, but under current testing conditions, it can operate at an average level of 200 kW. Engineers working on the highway-related developments indicate that this allows passenger cars to gain a range of 23 kilometers per kilometer, while trucks achieve a gain of one kilometer. The vehicles used in the trials were the Toyota bZ4X model, a small urban electric car, a bus, and a DAF XF truck. Each vehicle successfully drew energy from the road through a 40-kilogram receiver panel mounted on the underside.

The primary objective of the wireless charging road project is not so much to support private vehicles, but rather to bolster electric freight transportation.

The driving force behind the project's support for electric freight transportation is the ability for trucks to charge while on the move on long routes. This approach will not only reduce the downtime of vehicles but also eliminate the need for large batteries, thereby reducing costs. According to engineers, this method could present a more sustainable solution than massive battery systems.

However, the system's energy loss currently stands around 20%, and for the technology to become widespread, substantial infrastructure investment and international standardization are required. For this reason, experts suggest that in the short term, wireless charging roads will be utilized solely on logistics routes and limited testing areas.
