The flawless travel shots that we encounter on social media platforms often serve as the greatest source of inspiration for travel enthusiasts when deciding on their routes. Especially locations that appear to be in harmony with nature, quiet, and peaceful are presented as fairy-tale paradises with the help of filters and the right angles on digital platforms. However, every tourist spot that becomes popular inevitably faces a heavy influx of visitors. When people set out with the dream of experiencing the calm atmosphere they see on screen, they encounter a stark contrast between the aesthetics of the digital world and the reality of the physical world.

A social media user juxtaposed the flawless representation of Giethoorn, the fairy-tale village in the Netherlands famous for its water canals, historic wooden bridges, and enchanting houses, on Instagram with its appearance during the busy season. The serene images of the village, which rival postcards, are immediately followed by tourist traffic created by dozens of travel boats jammed in the canals, particularly disappointing those who added this village to their travel itinerary.

What truly matters is being able to go to the right place at the right season.

What truly matters is being able to go to the right place at the right season.

Travel content shared on social media platforms is inherently curated to highlight the most aesthetic, serene, and visually pleasing moments. Content creators either shoot at the crack of dawn to capture an image isolated from the crowds, or digitally erase any other people that happen to be in the frame. This creates a perceptual illusion in the viewer's mind that the place in question is always as tranquil as depicted. However, when historical settlements with narrow canals and limited infrastructure, like Giethoorn, face the phenomenon of overtourism, this aesthetic construct completely falls apart. Hundreds of boats trying to navigate the same narrow canal leave holiday-goers expecting a peaceful nature trip in the midst of chaos reminiscent of rush hour traffic in metropolises. When planning a trip, it is critically important to research the high season periods, daily visitor capacity, and local living conditions of the area to be visited, rather than focusing solely on viral videos and flawless photos. This will effectively prevent your expectations from clashing with reality, thereby significantly reducing the potential for disappointment.
