Explore Hidden Plateaus of Turkey: From the Black Sea to the Mediterranean

Turkey is home to countless plateaus due to its location. Especially in the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions, there are many plateaus thanks to the elevation and natural conditions. In these plateaus, both the locals of the region and tourists take short vacations. The plateaus, which are lush green natural wonders, preserve their natural appearance as long as they remain untouched. Apart from this, there are also many plateaus whose nature has deteriorated due to the effect of concretization. 

You can find the list of plateaus that still preserve their naturalness and fascinate those who go there; you can enjoy a peaceful holiday with plenty of oxygen and plenty of peace.

Giresun, located in the Eastern Black Sea, is home to many plateaus like other Black Sea cities. While there are Kumbet, Bektas, Kulakkaya Plateaus and Sis Mountain, which are considered tourist attractions here, Pasakonagi Plateau is a little behind these plateaus. 

Pasakonagi Plateau is on the borders of the Bulancak district of Giresun. Pasakonagi Plateau, located in Kovanlik Town of the district, is exactly 1450 meters above sea level. Transportation to the plateau is carried out through the town, and there are signposts along the way.

Pasakonagi Plateau is very famous in Giresun for its yellow, purple and white azaleas, deep valleys and waterfalls in these valleys. Karasay Waterfall, Gecilmez Valley, Cigseli Lake and Kizilot Meadow are must-see places in the plateau. 

Pasakonagi Plateau, which can be reached via the Pazarsuyu-Kovanlık road, is approximately 65 kilometers from the center.

Gorgit Plateau in Artvin is abandoned to its fate, as there is no household living there today. Located in Efeler Village, Gorgit Plateau is at an altitude of 1700 meters. It is used as an “intermediate plateau”, and villagers graze their animals here from time to time. 

There is no vehicle road to Gorgit Plateau, which is decorated with stone and wooden houses built over time. Therefore, you can reach the plateau with the help of a local guide or by coming to Efeler Village and staying in touch with the villagers.

Bercelan Plateau in Hakkari is one of the rare places where four seasons are experienced together. This is a plateau located at an altitude of 3300 meters. Its distance to Hakkari city center is 18 kilometers. Bercelan Plateau, which is very suitable for mountaineering, camping and trekking, is a hidden paradise for those who love tourism activities.

Sultan Murat Plateau is located about 25 kilometres from the Caykara district center. At an altitude of 2200 meters, this plateau has the mausoleums of soldiers who were martyred in the war with the Russians during World War I. Therefore, this place is also historically important.

The plateau got its name because Murat IV, who led the Iranian expedition in 1635, came here to rest and performed Friday prayers with his army and liked this environment very much. Today, you can do many nature sports in Sultan Murat Plateau.

Samsun is a relatively flat city compared to the Eastern Black Sea cities. Since the mountains lie behind the city, we cannot say that plateauing is very developed here. The plateaus far from the city center are also generally not very well known.

Kupecik Plateau is one of the lesser-known plateaus in Samsun. This plateau, which is connected to the Ladik district, has an altitude of 1600 meters. It is 23 kilometers from the district center. The plateau, which is accessible by all kinds of vehicles, is surrounded by plenty of water. It is strongly believed by the people of the region that this water dissolves kidney stones.
