Evangeline Lilly Reacts to Disney Laying off 1,000 Artists for AI Integration
Evangeline Lilly, who first gained fame with the phenomenal series Lost and then reached the pinnacle with projects like the Hobbit series and Antman, has expressed her disapproval towards Disney. The reason for her objection is the company's decision to lay off approximately a thousand artists due to artificial intelligence.
Digital artists and graphic designers are among the professionals most impacted by the advent of artificial intelligence.
A veritable bloodbath unfolded at industry titan Disney, with Marvel Studios bearing the brunt of the blow. Yesterday, approximately 1,000 employees worldwide were given their marching orders, leading to a near-complete severance with the visual development team at Marvel.
Evangeline Lilly, known from Lost and the Hobbit series, has shown her support for the artists who have been laid off.
In a statement made from her Instagram account, Lilly had this to say;
'When I first saw this post on social media, I knew I had to verify its authenticity before spreading it further. Hence, I reached out to my brilliant friend Andy Park, the creator of the original Wasp super costume and the original Wasp concept drawings for the 'AntMan and Wasp' movie. I simply asked him, 'Is this true? What's really going on?' To which he replied, 'Yes, it's true. I've been laid off as well.' I'm still finding it hard to believe. I can't comprehend that Disney has laid off artists who have breathed life into the existing Marvel universe with their imaginations and genius. The very people who initially invented and designed these characters are now being replaced by artificial intelligence... AI that will take the designs and creations of these artists and generate new versions from them... I'm deeply saddened for Andy and for each of the 1,000 artists that Disney has dismissed; particularly for the entire team at Marvel who are now seen as 'outdated/unnecessary' after building the Marvel empire. If you're a big Marvel fan, take a moment today to think about them, pray for them, honor them; honor the people who created the world you fell in love with. This was a human invention. These were human productions and tech giants should not be allowed to steal them for their robots to replicate. I find this disgusting and horrifying, and I stand with all artists.'
