€240 Million Building Designed Like Giant Rocks: Set to Become a New World Wonder
An extraordinary cultural structure is set to be constructed in Rotterdam, giving the impression of seven giant rocks stacked on top of each other. Developed with the ambition of becoming the 'new wonder of the world,' Rotterdam ROCKS will bring together exhibition spaces, a 200-room hotel, restaurants, and public terraces under one roof. Moreover, the facade of the building, covered with cavities, will create habitats for soil, water, plants, and animals.
The structure, shaped like seven rocks, will rise from the riverbank.
Rotterdam ROCKS is set to become one of the new icons of the Waterkant district, to be established on the southern bank of the Maas River. The design, prepared by MVRDV, consists of seven rock-shaped sections stacked on top of each other. The voids within the structure will be arranged like caves through which visitors can pass.
There will be two main routes inside the building. One of these will lead to exhibition spaces, while the other will provide access to the hotel and dining areas. A third path will wind up from the outside of the building, leading visitors to a public terrace where they can enjoy views of Rotterdam and the river.
The building will house a 200-room hotel and a vast exhibition space.
At the heart of the project will be a 5,000 square meter experiential space named Elysium. This area, showcasing art pieces, stories, and interactive exhibits, will illustrate to visitors how a more sustainable future can be built.
In addition to a 200-room hotel, Rotterdam ROCKS will also feature halls for educational, conference, and business events. Meeting spaces for local communities, a food section, a restaurant, and viewing terraces will transform the structure into a vibrant cultural hub at different times of the day.
The project, valued at 240 million euros, is slated to be inaugurated in 2032.
The numerous indentations and cavities to be created on the exterior of the building will serve more than just an aesthetic purpose. By introducing soil and water into these sections, plant growth will be facilitated, and habitats for birds, bees, and other small creatures will be established. As a result, the park by the river will extend vertically along the facade of the building.
The investment of approximately 240 million euros is also aimed at transforming the project into a laboratory where low-carbon construction methods are tested. In addition to this, 3,750 homes, schools, sports fields, workplaces, and a new train station will be built in Waterkant. According to the current plan, the opening of Rotterdam ROCKS is anticipated for the year 2032.
