Engin Polat Breaks His Silence Following Can Polat's Death With Emotional Statement

Can Polat, who had been both a close bodyguard and a family member to Engin Polat and Dilan Polat for many years, tragically lost his life in a gun attack in Çeşme, Izmir on June 3rd. Following the incident that had the whole of Turkey talking for days, all eyes turned to the Polat family. It was later revealed that Dilan Polat suffered a major psychological breakdown after the tragedy and was hospitalized for a period of time. Engin Polat, who had been silent for a long time, finally spoke about the incident for the first time in an extensive statement on the 40th day after his cousin's death.
Can Polat, who lost his life in an armed attack in Çeşme Alaçatı on June 3rd, was not only the cousin of Engin Polat, but also one of the most trusted figures who had been serving as the close bodyguard and driver for the family for many years.
The confession of the suspect, who was apprehended in the investigation launched after the attack, caused a significant stir in the public. According to allegations, the suspect claimed that his actual target was Engin Polat, but when he couldn't carry out his plan, he shot Can Polat instead. Furthermore, it was revealed from the information reflected in the investigation file that the attacker claimed to have reached the area by exploiting the real-time location information in Dilan Polat's social media posts.
In the wake of the attack that claimed the life of Can Polat, the Polat family went through extremely challenging times.
Following the incident, it was revealed that Dilan Polat suffered a significant psychological breakdown, was hospitalized for a while, and was later discharged. Additionally, official access restrictions were imposed on Dilan Polat's Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube accounts in the aftermath of the incident.
Engin Polat had expressed his pain through posts on his social media account, asking for prayers for his cousin, Can Polat.
Engin Polat, who made his first comprehensive statement following the death of Can Polat, also clarified the 'location sharing' debates that have been discussed in the public for days.
Starting his statement with the words, 'My brothers, I will make a statement about the incident for the first and last time,' Polat said that some media outlets and social media users blamed Dilan Polat's posts for Can Polat's death, but this was not the case.
Engin Polat emphasized that all decisions regarding family security were made by him, using the following statements:
'I make the decisions about the measures to be taken for our family's security, where and how the bodyguards will work, and also whether instant location sharing will be made or not. Dilan is not in control of any of these issues; she wouldn't know whether there is a threat to our family or not.'
In the continuation of his statement, Engin Polat expressed that they had not experienced any threats towards their family for approximately six months. Consequently, he revealed that it was his personal decision to go on a vacation to Cesme without any security.
Engin Polat stated that not only Dilan Polat, but also himself and other family members shared their live locations throughout the holiday, adding that all these decisions were made with his knowledge. The most striking part of Engin Polat's statement was his response to the criticisms targeting his wife. Polat declared that if there were any mistakes or oversights in the process, he fully accepted the responsibility. He expressed:
'If there is any oversight or mistake here, the responsibility is entirely mine. I will not accept anyone, especially my wife, being blamed for this.'
In the conclusion of his statement, Engin Polat, expressing that the pain they experienced was a severe trial for them, asked for prayers for Can Polat, whom he considered as his brother.
'However, as members of a Muslim society, we all know that death neither lags a second behind nor advances a second ahead. It seems that God has decreed such a severe trial for us.'
Polat ended his post with the following words:
'May God treat my brother with His mercy and make his abode heaven. May He grant us the patience to bear this pain and ease our hardships. Do not withhold your prayers from us. May God be pleased with you all.'
