The History of Kaz Lake

The History of Kaz Lake

A unique bird paradise in Tokat's Pazar district, Lake Kaz! Historical records of the lake and the plain within it point to a long history. The geographer Strabo, who wrote his name to the ancient age, included the lake, which takes its name from Kazova, in his work Geography with the statements ‘Iris (today Yeşilırmak), whose sources are in Pontus, flows westwards from the centre of the city of Komana (Gümenek) in Pontus and Dazimonitis (Kazova), a fertile plain.’

The history of Kaz Lake, which hosts historical structures and natural life and dazzles with its unique texture, dates back to the period when the Turks entered Anatolia. According to some written sources that have survived to the present day, during the conquest of Zile Castle, Danişmend Gazi carried the stones of the castle he destroyed to Lake Kaz with prisoners.

Geological Structure of Lake Kaz

Geological Structure of Lake Kaz

Kaz Lake, located in Kazova, is a tectonic lake. The altitude of the lake is approximately 540 metres and the depth is 1 to 1.15 kilometres. Lake Kaz is located in a 1170 hectare protection area as a “Wildlife Development Area”. The lake area is 274 hectares.

The lake, which has a wetland area of approximately 201 hectares, was to be dried in 1870 upon the request of Sivas province. However, the drying efforts remained fruitless. Later, many plans have been made for the Lake, which was to be re-established in 1890. Some of them are transferring the water from the Pazar district to the lake, connecting the lake with Yeşilırmak and afforestation around the lake.

In 1966, Almus Dam was put into service, but the waters of Yeşilırmak, which no longer flooded, could not reach the lake. The dry areas of the lake, where drainage channels were opened, started to be used as fields by the villagers.
