Denis Villeneuve, who made his mark in the film industry with impressive works like Incendies, Prisoners, and Sicario, has focused primarily on the science fiction genre over the past decade.
After making a significant impact with the 2016 film Arrival, he continued his journey with Blade Runner 2049 and Dune. Villeneuve is now preparing to direct Dune: Messiah, and it seems that even after stepping away from the Dune universe, he will not stray too far from the science fiction genre.
One of the projects that piqued Villeneuve's interest years ago was Arthur C. Clarke’s classic science fiction novel Rendezvous With Rama.
However, there had been little progress on this project for a long time.
In a recent interview, the director revealed that he still has a deep passion for this film and hopes to bring it to life one day, which excited his fans.
He stated, 'I may have the opportunity to adapt Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous With Rama into a film. It’s a story about astronauts making first contact with an unknown civilization, much like 2001: A Space Odyssey. But unlike Dune, it’s based on scientific and technological developments that may be possible in the future, rather than fantastical elements. I would love to make such a pure science-focused science fiction film at least once in my career.'
In addition to Dune: Messiah and Rendezvous With Rama, Villeneuve is also occupied with projects like Cleopatra and Nuclear War: A Scenario.
Therefore, Rendezvous With Rama may not be his next film. However, there is significant progress on the project: the screenplay has been written by Eric Roth, the screenwriter behind Dune, Forrest Gump, and Killers of the Flower Moon, and it was recently announced that it has been completed.
Considering Villeneuve’s passion for science fiction, the likelihood of Rendezvous With Rama coming to fruition seems quite high.
