Why Did The Odyssey Make Cinema History?

Why Did The Odyssey Make Cinema History?

Christopher Nolan has made a first with his new film The Odyssey, which pushes the limits of cinema technology. The film stands out as the first feature-length production shot entirely with IMAX film cameras.

Nolan, who used IMAX cameras in films such as Oppenheimer, The Dark Knight, Dunkirk, and Tenet, was only able to shoot certain scenes in this format in these productions. The main reason for this was that IMAX cameras were quite large, heavy, and loud systems. It was not seen possible for many years to shoot the entire film with these cameras due to the mechanical noise created in dialogue scenes.

This obstacle was overcome with new solutions developed for The Odyssey. Cameras were equipped with special sound insulation systems and were carried by a team of several people in many shots due to their weight.

Approximately 640 Kilometers of Film Were Used

2.1 million feet (approximately 640 kilometers) of IMAX film was used in the shooting of the film. Nolan thus aimed for the highest possible image quality by preferring to use analog film instead of digital shooting. The IMAX 70 mm exhibition copy of the film consists of a film strip longer than 17 kilometers and weighs approximately 240 kilograms.

Real Shootings Were Preferred Over Digital Effects

Another notable aspect of the production is that the use of digital effects was kept to a minimum. Nolan preserved the natural appearance of the film by preferring real sets, practical effects, and physical shooting techniques as much as possible.

It Will Be Shown in Its Real Format in Only 41 Theaters Worldwide

However, experiencing this in the way the film was shot is quite difficult. The number of cinemas that can show The Odyssey in the IMAX 70 mm (15/70) format in which it was shot is only 41 worldwide. Therefore, most viewers will watch the film in digital IMAX or IMAX with Laser formats.

There is no cinema hall in Turkey with an IMAX 70 mm projection system. However, IMAX halls using laser projection offer higher image and sound quality compared to standard cinema screenings.
