China Built the World’s Largest Railway Station in Just 38 Months!
China has added yet another massive infrastructure project to its portfolio. The Chongqing East Train Station, constructed in the city of Chongqing, is being hailed as one of the largest train stations in the world with an area of 1.22 million square meters. This size is equivalent to approximately 170 football fields.
However, it's not just the sheer size of the station that stands out. The project was brought to life on a particularly challenging terrain in Chongqing, a city known for its mountainous landscape.
It was completed in 38 months.
The construction of Chongqing East Train Station was completed in a mere 38 months. The swift completion of such a large-scale transportation hub is one of the details that makes the project stand out.
During the construction process, nearly 40,000 workers were employed, alongside the use of robotic machinery. It is reported that approximately 2 million cubic meters of concrete and 366,000 tons of steel were used for the colossal structure. Moreover, the station's roof houses a steel truss system weighing in at 16,500 tons.
The size of a small city
Chongqing East has been designed as more than just a structure where trains make their stop; it's a major transportation hub. The station boasts 29 platforms and 15 railway lines. It's noted that the structure ascends up to eight stories and its 400-meter-long platforms are capable of servicing China's longest high-speed trains.
With the capacity to serve up to 16,000 passengers per hour during peak times, Chongqing East stands out not only as a vital hub for city transportation, but also as a significant center in terms of China's high-speed train network.
Even larger than Grand Central.
The enormity of Chongqing East Train Station becomes more apparent when compared to some of the world's known large stations. It's reported to be approximately six times larger than New York's Grand Central Station and about fifteen times bigger than Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, one of the largest train stations in Europe.
With its area of 1.22 million square meters, the station, which is larger than some small towns, has become one of the most striking examples of China's massive transportation projects that have accelerated in recent years. The completion of a structure of this scale in a mountainous terrain in just 38 months has transformed the project from merely being a train station into an engineering spectacle in its own right.
